Clinical Rotations
Clinical rotations enable nursing majors to explore their interests by gaining practical experience in different specialities while putting into practice what they learn in the classroom and Nursing Simulation Lab. We place students in magnet-designated hospitals—which are recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for nursing excellence—throughout the Chicago area. The city’s tremendous diversity means that students treat patients from different racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds and age groups.
Requirements
Nursing majors will complete eight clinical rotations while taking corresponding courses that pair theory with their clinical experience. Rotations include fundamentals, adult, obstetrics, psychology, pediatrics, advanced medicine, community health, and residency. The community health rotation occurs at a community site and has a 120-hour requirement. The residency rotation has a 160-hour requirement. Both of these occur in the student’s final semester. Students are matched with community and residency sites in consultation with faculty.

International Experience
In partnership with University Partnership Initiatives, nursing faculty lead two-week trips to Mexico and Zambia each year. Nursing students may sign up for a trip and count the time toward their community health rotation requirement. In Mexico, students work with pediatric patients in a hospital, and in Zambia, students conduct health screenings in a school.
